What Are the 5 Stages of Hoarding?

November 3, 2022

Hoarding is a disorder characterized by an excessive collection of things or junk because of a felt need to maintain them. This unreasonable need to keep and store items that have no actual worth can have unpleasant emotional and physical ramifications.

Hoarding disorders occur in different forms and shapes; the intensity of a person's hoarding condition can range from moderate and unnoticed to clear. Hoarding can affect the well-being of the individual and others around them. Here's all you need to understand about the five stages of hoarding.

Stage 1

Even though this is the least serious stage of hoarding, the lack of organization of possessions means it transcends the simple act of collection.

Hoarding stage one has few telltale signs, since the disorder may go undetected because there isn't much visible clutter. But, during this stage, an individual packs things in the house's storage spaces.

Stage 2

Hoarding stage two is a bit more serious, with at least one domestic item not functional and at least some clutter on the walkways. Stage two hoarding happens when the amount of clutter in the home increases.

Other indications of stage two hoarding include the growth of light mildew in the kitchen and bathroom or toilets, visible animal excrement or stench from waste, and less limited cleanliness owing to lack of accessibility. A hoarder who has reached stage 2 avoids guests because they feel embarrassed or anxious about their hoarded possessions.

Stage 3

Homes in the third stage of hoarding have noticeable clutter outside because belongings that belong inside have found their way outside. At this stage, one part of the property has minor structural issues.

Other indications of hoarding in the household include a buildup of considerable dirt and filthy clothes and shoes, a mild bug infestation from bedbugs, chiggers, mites, and ants, and moderate instances of spiders.

Also, a person at this stage of hoarding could become hostile or aggressive when friends or relatives inquire about the condition of their property.

Stage 4

Homes in stage four hoarding contain blocked exits, visible mildew throughout the structure, the stench of sewage accumulation, and signs of water leaks, ruined walls, or shattered windows. The pet count in the house surpasses the allowable limit.

More signs of hoarding stage four include spoiled food in the house, bedding and furniture infestations, and an excessive amount of spiders and spiderwebs. Poor hygiene is common among those with stage four hoarding. Also, stage four hoarding presents an enormous risk to one's health.

Stage 5

Stage 5 is the severe stage of hoarding. At this stage, the consequences of hoarding result in serious problems for the hoarder and for others living in and around the affected house. Hoarders who are at this stage exhibit depressive symptoms. Also, people who have reached this stage move out of their properties because of the clutter.

Also, the home's structural problems will often worsen until they become environmental risks. Fires and floods might occur because of faulty wiring and congested sewer systems. The invasion of rodents and insects might endanger the entire community.

Last but not least, there can come a time when the house is so unlivable that anyone who enters the house will need to wear complete personal protection.
